So here I am asking the MPU community for suggestions: Should I –Ī.) Power on in wrangling Gmail through the browser – for my needs, it won’t take long to get comfortable, and is all I need?ī.) Consider having another shake at Mail.app – and trust that the new M1’s are going to have it behaving better (snappier) than before – and isn’t going to try and download the thousands and thousands of emails that I don’t need on device. But goodness, it’s not clean (or simple) – at least as it looks for me at the moment, as it’s set up. I’m sure it’s mostly as a result of my approaching it as I expect Mail.app and Outlook to work, and the different paradigm just has me confuddled. To be honest, I find the whole interface of Gmail to be pretty confusing – and I cannot really get it to do things I expect it to do. I’m hoping that someone can recommend resources that would explain how to “turn back time” in my Gmail accounts, and have everything simply revert to a stock/vanilla online? I’ve had a look on YT – but most are trying to give tips about wrangling things with the power-features of Gmail, which I don’t think I need. And countless “smart” folders left over from my experiments with Spark, Airmail etc etc., and no doubt, Mail.app. I have tabs for “social” and “newsletter” that I must have switched on in the past (which sees Google dividing things up automatically into tabs), and don’t even begin to know how turn the feature off. My challenge: Gmail online is a mess, on my side. And then – over on the Mac – Gmail in multiple windows/tabs inside a “dedicated” browser off to the side (like Brave?). The short of this is I plan on continuing with using Mail on my phone/iPad (unless it would make sense to get the dedicated Gmail app for iOS?). Another reason not to want any of this on the new laptop –– unless the alternatives below prove to be too cumbersome. However, I have several Gmail accounts (for… reasons) – that have ballooned over the years. Occasionally, I get things over into DEVONthink (which is one of the few advantages of using Mail.app). Gmail is therefore personal, and includes bank statements, occasional communication from the kid’s school, monthly bills, newsletters etc – but very little I need to action. Regarding my usage of email – It occurred to me that I mostly keep track of what is coming in, via the iOS side of things.Īlso, emails received via Gmail are “informational” 99% of the time, in that my work-related email comes in via Outlook. So space is at more of a premium – and I don’t want to be fighting with Mail’s backend for storage (a battle I will lose). Mail.app has been terrible of late on my previous MBP – and am not convinced I need it on my new laptop.Įspecially since I’ve moved from 1TB to 512GB. Since moving over to my new MBP, I have yet to configure Mail.app with any of my accounts. "What I'm going to do throughout the day is going to be beneficial, not only to the planet, but also to people that appreciate the materials," he says.ġ800 N. He says this work is "very satisfying" and has been not only a passion, but a calling. With each salvage, a little piece of history is also preserved, and that will continue through Beaty's venture called Philada. Recently, he acquired some limestone carvings that came from a church in North Philadelphia, but over the years he's collected a treasure trove of artifacts. Many items he saves are from historic mansions, factories and churches. About a block away from his business is a lot with more reclaimed materials he calls "the yard." There are reclaimed items for both homeowners and contractors. Beaty has collections of hardware that they've acquired on different projects, along with building joists and flooring. He co-founded more salvage companies in California before heading back to Philadelphia. "We go into buildings that are being demolished or renovated, older buildings, and then salvage, pull out items," he says.īeaty says it's beneficial for business and for the planet since these reclaimed items "could probably have a new home instead of going into a dump." In 2014, he started his current architectural salvage business called Beaty American. What's old is new again at Beaty American architectural salvage businessīob Beaty has spent much of his life working to reduce, reuse and recycle. Pocono Mountain Network takes us on a trip to Jim Thorpe to get a view of the outdoors as well as indoor fun at their various shops. I did locate a recent sale for one with 38,000 miles on its odometer, and its sale price was around half of the asking price for this vehicle. For me, the sticking point is the asking price, which is a long way above the average. That would tend to suggest that this one probably has plenty of life left in it, especially if it is treated with a reasonable level of respect. They also have a reputation for mechanical longevity, and there are more than a few kicking around on our roads today with more than 200,000 miles under their wheels. Using a Suzuki as the basis for a light off-roader was a smart move because they are a vehicle that developed a solid reputation for off-road versatility and on-road economy. The Geo Tracker is an interesting vehicle. It is said to run and drive well and needs nothing. He has returned it to a roadworthy state, and it now has 20,500 miles showing. When the owner found the Geo in the barn, it had just over 12,000 miles on the clock. It means that any attention that would usually be devoted to a clutch and shifter can be diverted to making sure that you get where you’re going with less chance of getting stuck. Mind you there is a lot to be said for an automatic transmission when tackling tougher terrain. Still, it wouldn’t be a fireball when it comes to acceleration or outright performance. The automatic transmission and power steering would make this little classic a pleasure to drive in heavy traffic. As well as the previously mentioned characteristics, they are light, maneuverable, and fuel-efficient. This is where we arrive at the other reason why so many of these little trackers were used as commuter vehicles. There are no engine photos, but we know that the Geo features a 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine, a 3-speed automatic transmission, and 4-wheel-drive with manual locking front hubs. The windows have been converted to power operation, which adds to the convenience that comes with air conditioning and a tilt wheel. The owner has installed a double DIN stereo with Apple/Android capability and GPS. There are a couple of aftermarket additions, but otherwise, it’s all as it rolled off the showroom floor. The trim is in good order, and the carpet doesn’t show any of the stains or marks that can result from repeated exposure to mud and other “icky” substances. Judging by the state of this interior, I tend to think that it has led that sort of life. This makes perfect sense because they weren’t horrendously expensive to buy, and they provided better visibility than your average small car, thanks to the raised ride height. While the Tracker was intended to provide its owners with a life of adventure in the great outdoors, many ended up serving as commuter vehicles. The Geo wears its original wheel, and these are free from damage, staining, and corrosion. The trim and plastic show no signs of deterioration, while the glass appears to be perfect. The panels are laser straight, and there is no evidence of rust. The paint holds a beautiful shine, with no signs of fading or checking. Either it wasn’t long, or the conditions were ideal because the little Geo has survived in excellent condition. The owner found it hidden in a Tennessee barn, and it isn’t clear how long it had been in storage. There is no mistaking that it traces its roots back to its cousin, the Suzuki Sidekick. It doesn’t take a lot of imagination to determine the lineage of this Sky Blue Tracker. I have to say a big thank you to Barn Finder Ikey H for spotting this little beauty for us. It can be yours by handing the owner $16,000. The Tracker is located in Port Orange, Florida, and has been listed for sale here on Craigslist. He has had his fun, so it is now time for it to head to a new home. It has a genuine 20,500 miles showing on its odometer and is probably one of the cleanest examples you will find on our roads today. He has revived it, and it is in a roadworthy state. The owner of this 1995 Geo Tracker found the vehicle languishing in a Tennessee barn. If you have a medical condition that makes sleeping or waking more difficult, visit a doctor for advice and treatment options. If you’re finding it hard to get in bed an hour or so earlier, try moving your bedtime up in more manageable increments, such as 15 minutes per night. Of course, to ensure you’re getting enough sleep, this may mean going to bed earlier than you usually would. Plus, Abdeh notes, not only will a consistent bedtime and wake-up time “help you to fall asleep more easily, but it will also mean that the quality of your sleep should improve.” “By going to bed and getting up at the same time each day, it becomes easier to wake up in the mornings and start your day,” says Meadows. How to not sleep through your alarm Build a better routineīuilding a better routine can work wonders, whether you accidentally oversleep or find it difficult to get out of bed in the mornings. If you need immediate support, the following resources are available 24/7: Talk therapy with a trusted therapist can help you explore long-term solutions for the challenges in your life. “If you’re finding it increasingly difficult to get out of bed… you may want to talk to a mental health professional about the symptoms of depression,” he says. Interestingly, Meadows points out, “depression and sleep have a bidirectional relationship, meaning that poor sleep habits can contribute to the development of depression, and having depression makes an individual more likely to suffer from sleep-related issues. Similarly, stress and anxiety can cause worry that leads to sleep deprivation and a lack of motivation to get out of bed. When they do finally nod off, they may have just a few hours until morning and easily sleep through their alarm. People who are depressed “can often be too anxious or lethargic to get a good night’s sleep,” adds Abdeh. “One of the common symptoms of depression is oversleeping,” notes Meadows. Mental health should be taken into account, too. Night terrors, sleep walking, and sleep apnea can also cause issues, along with medications like beta-blockers and sleeping pills. “For instance, cardiac rhythm sleep disorders stop you from developing a regular sleeping pattern, which can mean that you go into a deeper sleep that is harder to wake from.” “Certain medical conditions can make it harder for some people to wake up in the morning,” says Hussain Abdeh, clinical director and superintendent pharmacist at Medicine Direct. “When their alarm goes off in the morning, especially during the earlier hours of the morning, they are in a deeper phase of sleep than those who go to bed earlier in the evening.”Īnd that can be a recipe for disaster if you have an early wake-up call. “Those who are naturally ‘ night owls’ tend to stay up later at night, and, therefore, sleep later in the morning,” he says. Sleeping at the wrong time for your natural chronotype ( sleep schedule) can also be problematic. “Whether it’s one night or over the course of several nights, by not getting a full 8 hours of sleep, you create a sleep debt that needs to be repaid,” Meadows explains. The quality and amount of sleep you’re getting may be to blame for your oversleeping problems, particularly if you have an inconsistent routine due to things like shift work. “Therefore, people who are able to produce more sleep spindles may be hard to wake because they can effectively cancel out the noise that is attempting to disturb their sleep.”īut plenty of other factors can cause a deep, deep slumber. “A study on brain rhythms and stable sleep found that individuals who generate more sleep spindles during a quiet night of sleep were able to tolerate more noise on a subsequent, less quiet night of sleep. These sleep spindles “act as a noise-canceling device,” says Meadows. Guy Meadows, co-founder and clinical lead at Sleep School, research suggests that deep sleepers have more sleep spindles, a form of brain activity during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep. If you don’t actually hear your alarm, you could just naturally be a heavy sleeper.Īccording to Dr. As color pencil pigments are transparent, you should still be able to see the lines of your drawing shining. Uniques - Collective name for civ abilities, leader abilities, unique units, unique buildings, unique districts and unique improvements. Tall empires - Empires that emphasise city development over expansion, usually resulting in fewer, but bigger, cities. If a civilization is not listed as having a start bias there, it does not have one, even if you feel like you keep spawning in the same terrain when playing as that civ. There are five tiers of start bias civs with a tier 1 start bias are placed before civs of tier 2 and so on, increasing their odds of receiving a favourable starting location.Ĭomplete information on start biases within the game can be found in the Civilizations.xml file (find the Civ 6 folder in Steam's program files, then go through the Base, Assets, Gameplay and Data folders to find the file). This is typically used for civilizations that have early bonuses dependent on a particular terrain type. Start bias - The kind of terrain, terrain feature or resource a civilization is more likely to start near. Some leader abilities come with an associated unique unit on top of the standard one every civ has. Usually but not always, they tend to be more specific in scope than civ abilities. LA (Leader Ability) - The unique ability of a specific leader, which like civ abilities do not have to be built. All of them can produce Great Works that offer tourism and culture, making them important to anyone seeking a cultural victory. GWAM - Collective name for Great Writers, Artists and Musicians. Civs with unique tile improvements generally favour a more dispersed empire in order to make use of them, as do civs focused on wonder construction. This is useful if you want to ensure cities have plenty of room for both districts and tile improvements. This is useful if you want to make use of districts that gain adjacency bonuses from other districts, maximise the number of copies of the same district in the same area, or to maximise the potential of area-of-effect bonuses later in the game.ĭispersed empires - Civs with cities that are spread out. Unlike unique units, buildings, districts and improvements, civ abilites do not have to be built.Ĭivic cards - Another name for policy cards you fill up your government with these for additional bonuses and can switch them for free every time you unlock a civic.Ĭompact empires - Civs with cities close together. Some deviation is allowed in the event that taking a technology or civic off the main track provides some kind of advantage that makes up for that deviation (either a source of extra science/culture or access to something necessary for a eureka or inspiration boost.ĬA (Civ Ability) - The unique ability of a civilization, shared by all its leaders. Positive examples include Factories and Stadiums (which by default offer production and happiness respectively to cities within a 6 tile radius unless they're within range of another building of the same type) and a negative example is nuclear weapons, which cause devastation over a wide radius.īeelining - The strategy of obtaining a technology or civic quickly by only researching it and its prerequisites. Terminology used in this guide and not in-game is explained here.ĪoE (Area of Effect) - Describes bonuses or penalties that affect multiple tiles in a set radius. To modify these values for other game speeds: Note that all costs (production, science, culture, gold, etc.) mentioned within the guide assume a game played on the normal speed settings. Finally, the Counter-Strategies section discusses how best to play against the civ, including a consideration of leader agendas if the civ is controlled by a computer.Only the ones with the most synergy with the civ's uniques are mentioned - these should be given more consideration than they would be for other civs but are not necessarily the "best" choices when playing as the civ for a given victory route. Administration describes some of the most synergistic governments, civic cards, pantheons, religious beliefs, wonders, city-states and Great People for the civ.Multiple sections for Uniques explain in detail how to use each special bonus of the civilization. The Victory Skew section describes to what extent the civ (and its individual leaders where applicable) are inclined towards particular victory routes. The Outline details the mechanics of how the civilization's unique features work and what their start bias is (assuming they have one at all). This guide is divided into multiple sections explaining how best to use and play against this specific civ. Someone registered a Twitter account using his name and posted many derogatory status updates with the aim of damaging his reputation. Louis Cardinals, found out the hard way just how damaging cybersquatting can be. They have now made the practice a violation of their terms and services. Social media sites like Facebook and Twitter continue to grow in popularity and this has led to a new form of cybersquatting where trademark-protected brands or names are registered by others. While the legal consequences of ICANN’s UDRP procedure are limited to deletion or transfer of a domain, the ACPA also allows claims for damages of up to USD 100,000 to be obtained. In addition, providing false data during the registration process is considered malicious. When does using a brand name actually become controversial? Previously, such maliciousness was determined by US jurisdiction as being when a domain is registered in order to abuse a brand’s traffic domain for their own purposes, or when a domain is bought so it can be sold to the trademark owner. This offers an alternative to negotiations before a state court and enables complainants to obtain a transfer of the disputed domain in addition to deletion. The domain and brand need to be identical or confusingly similar for the case to have any chance of success.įor disputes relating to international domains, ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) has introduced a central arbitration procedure, known as the Uniform Domain Name Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP). In order to appeal to the law, the plaintiff needs to be the trademark owner and show that the defendant is maliciously profiting from using their brand as a domain name. It came into effect in 1999 and was intended to protect consumers from being misled.Ī typical use for ACPA is cybersquatting. This is also known as “Truth in Domain Names Act” and is an extension of the Lanham Act, which governs US trademark law on a federal level. The Anticybersquatting Consumer Protection Act (ACPA) was created in the US in order to solve domain name disputes. For example, they include content which shows the business or the person concerned in a bad light.Ī special type of cybersquatting is typosquatting, where typos are purposefully made in brand name domains in order to intercept visitors. To put pressure on rights holders, many of these domains are used for malicious purposes. If the controversial domain contains the name or part of the name of musicians, sports personalities, TV stars, or other celebrities this results in an overlap of both practices. The aim of registering legally-protected terms as part of the domain name is to sell them to the actual rights owner for a higher transfer fee.Ĭybersquatting is also referred to as brand jacking or name jacking, depending on the type of trademark protection. While domain grabbers target unprotected terms, cybersquatters concentrate specifically on trademarks and proper names. In a surprising move, Yamaha unveiled an entirely new electric guitar line just in time for the 2016 NAMM Show. Check out the official video demo from Martin: Yamaha Revstar Series What's cool about this acoustic guitar is its cosmetic references to John Lennon's various artwork and songs including his self portrait, peace signs and many more. The Martin D-28 John Lennon 75th Anniversary Dreadnought was a true head turner at the event, and that is to be expected since it carries the name of the iconic artist. Sound on Sound had a nice video demo of the guitar at the NAMM Show, watch it below: Martin D-28 John Lennon 75th Anniversary Dreadnought Click here for our feature on the Starstream Type-1. This one wowed many NAMM 2016 attendees with its impressive 27 guitar models and built-in effects, where in you can into via quick knob adjustments directly on the top of the guitar. This is certainly something expected from the company because they are known for embracing technology and applying whatever they can into their products. Released a few days before the 2016 NAMM Show, the Starstream Type-1 is Vox Amplifications' entry into the instrument modeling market. The guys at Andertons had a close up experience with the amp, check out the video below: Vox Starstream Type-1 In addition to modeled effects and amps, these amps also feature bluetooth connectivity and realtime control via smart phone apps, features that are not necessarily new, but cool nonetheless when paired with Marshall's reputation for quality. Not sure why they shied away from this technology for so long, but they should have come up with this product a while back - especially considering the quality that is being showcased by the demo videos. Marshall Amplification finally dived into modern digital modeling technology, resulting in the Marshall Code Amp line, which is one of the coolest new product line in this year's NAMM. Still, there are some cool and interesting products that caught our attention, we have listed them here for your convenience. However, it seems that most manufacturers played it safe this year, because there are no truly ground breaking technology that was unveiled, rather most new releases are basically improved versions of their predecessors. As always, different manufacturers have brought their A game into this trade show, showcasing their latest music gear. |
